The youth of today

On Thursday last week, as the full horror of the London terrorist bombings was starting to unfold on the news, I had the following brief IM exchange with a young lad I’ve been chatting to regularly for months now (I’ve changed his name, in case he has the good grace to be embarrassed by his comments):

  • (13:33:22) Callow Youth: I can’t see Mastodon now
  • (14:21:00) Richard: Yeah, that’s the bad news of course.
  • (14:21:30) Callow Youth: When I first asked I had no idea hadn’t turned telly on. Pissed off now. Can’t see my gig.
  • (14:21:53) Richard: Oh no, what a tragedy.
  • (14:22:43) Callow Youth: Couldn’t give a damn about the people to be honest.
  • (14:23:04) Callow Youth: No one I know, it doesn’t affect me. And it was a pretty pathetic attack compared to the twin towers.
  • (14:23:15) Richard: See ya.

Was I so lacking in empathy when I was 16? Bloody hell, I hope not.
