Sir Jamie of Oliver

In the past, I’ve always dismissed Jamie Oliver as a bit of a Mockey tosser, but after watching snatches of the recent documentary Jamie’s School Dinners, and seeing the resulting debate it has generated, I am forced to revise my opinion of the Naked Chef.

The program has highlighted the appalling state of the current school dinner system, and the shocking lack of understanding that many children (and clearly by extension their parents) have about diet. Oliver’s commitment, passion and determination to improve the food offered to children could see the greatest positive change to children’s diet since post war rationing ended in 1954.

There are some people willing to dismiss Oliver’s campaign as a publicity stunt, but plenty more that can see the real value of his efforts (whatever his motivations). I hope that the government continue not only to tackle the problem quickly and decisively, but to reward Jamie Oliver for his efforts.
