Buy our product, or suffer the consequences

These days, there seem to be a lot television ads around for products like disinfectants, which highlight the number of germs that are going to eat babies and children alive if irresponsible parents don’t invest in the product immediately. This is despite studies which suggest that our increasing obsession with cleanliness and hygiene is a contributory factor in the rise of allergies and Asthma.

I detect the same whiff of attempting to generate hysteria in the latest “surveys” from Symantec, one of the leading personal computer security vendors. They have announced the possibility of increasing security threats to Mac OS X and Mozilla based browsers like Firefox, as the popularity and market share of these products increases.

I share the opinion of the Unofficial Apple Weblog that this has more to do with marketing than a philanthropic desire to warn users of potential threats. Keep spreading that FUD, guys.
